Music that Shaped My Life
by Samuel Febres
Like I’m sure it was for many people, music was a very important part of my life. I subdued myself in the music that I listend to. I remember going to the music store and spending a couple of hours listening to CDs searching for new bands, and checking out new albums of bands that I already liked. I would read liner notes, memorize lyrics, instrument parts, learn the names of the band members and what instruments they played, and admire the album art.
In my teenage years, the music that I purchased was almost exclusively Christian. That isn’t to say I wasn’t opposed to listening to non Christian music, which I wasn’t, I just would rather spend the money I did have music I knew I would like whole-heartedly and wouldn’t necessarily need to be concerned with the content of what I was listening to. I was also fortunate at the time that record labels like 5 minute walk records and tooth and nail records were just getting started promoting acts that provided good alternative music by Christian artists. Without these types of labels, I was losing hope in finding quality Christian music to listen to that I would enjoy. I pretty much based most of the CDs and music that I bought off of what label they were on, which at the time was mostly tooth and nail bands.
Unfortunately, now that I’m older, I have less time to spend in record stores or online listening to music for a few hours on end to find something new, nor do I have the extra change to spend buying a couple of CDs a month, but those years when I did really meant a lot to me.
The music may not have been life changing in the sense that it spoke something powerful and I dedicated my life to some cause because of it, but I identified and connected with the music and/or the lyrics.
In rememberance of that time, I’d like to share some of those artists here with you.
- MxPx
- Five Iron Frenzy
- The Supertones
- Plankeye
- The W’s
- All Star United
- Sixpence None the Richer
