Ran across this today courtesy of a tweet from friend Joshua Inkenbrandt. Someone took a little time to work on a single off of Adele‘s most recent album, 21, called Rolling in the Deep and put this little bad boy together. I’m definitely a fan of the original and the remix. I hope you enjoy it.

If you haven’t heard of Relient K before, this might not be the best album to use as an introduction, but definitely a fun album if you’re familiar with the songs they’ve covered. A good starter album to check out, I would recommend Mmhmm. You can buy it at Amazon.com or stream it at rdio.

This post isn’t about Mmhmm though. It’s about covers and Relient K’s new album, Relient K Is For Karaoke EP. It’s got 7 cover songs ranging from Justin Beiber to Cyndi Lauper. Good fun stuff worth checking out. Listen to the audio streams from rdio below, and if you dig, go ahead and buy it.

I ran across this video online and I fell in love. The music, story built by the lyrics build such a great story and image. I haven’t hard of Mali Music before, but I’m definitely interested in checking out some more of it.

I’m not sure of the name of this track, but I’m trying to look it up so I can pick it up, cause it’s dope. If you know what it’s called or where I can find it please let me know. I couldn’t find it on his website, or mentions of it on his twitter page. I will be listening to his album that’s available on rdio though. recommend that you do the same.

I’m very excited. In just over a week I will be performing my first concert with my new band, goodbye rogers. Currently we’re a duo, with me on the guitar and vocals and my brother in law, Blake Griffin playing the drums. I’m excited. I feel like this is something that I should have done a long time ago, but I managed to put it off or made excuses. Maybe the time truly wasn’t right. Either way, I’ve got a show coming up with a 9 song set list and a 30 minute time slot; 6 originals and 3 covers. The list may get shortened if it runs over my time slot, but we’ll see how that goes in rehearsals later this week.

I would love the support of my friends and family. If you’re in Tallahssee on February 27th, come out to the American Legion Hall by Lake Ella. The show is called Acoustic Ovation and will feature other performers. I will be 2nd in the slot of 5 performers and the doors will open at 7pm. All performers will be doing acoustic sets for the evening (hence the acoustic in the name).

We’ve made it really easy to get tickets to this show in advance and save you some money in the process. You don’t have to meet me, you don’t have to go to some store to buy them. I would like to thank those of you who voted for me in the Be a Star competition. I unfortunately did not win the round, that honor goes to Kim McClure, who is a friend and did an excellent job despite technical issues during her performance. Congratulations to Kim! Awesome job. This Saturday, July 24th, I have the honor of playing electric guitar for a friend of mine named Royce Lovett. He’s recording a live CD at The Engine Room in Tallahassee, Florida called Tangible Incentive.

I would love to see you and your friends there rocking out with us, it’s gonna be good times. If you like dancing, and bopping your head along to good tunes, you’re not gonna want to miss it.

I love this song. It’s the title track from MUTEMATH’s album, Armistice
. I really enjoyed hearing it live in Atlanta last fall when I caught them there. It was a little weird at first listen, but it had a great jam and groove. I love what they did with it in a live setting.

MUTEMATH is definitely a live band. Their albums are great and I have loved them all, but if you haven’t seen them perform live, you’re really missing out on a great show, teamwork and musicianship.

Humbly I’ll Fall, a Sammy J Original

I recently finished up recording a song that I wrote. The title is the title of this post (minus the Sammy J Original part… however… hmm). Anyway, would love for you to check it out. I hope you like it.

For those interested, I recorded the song entirely in Logic Express using my laptop. I used my lovely guitar Betsy (who turned 11 years old this month) for all the electric guitar parts, through a small Epiphone Valve Jr. amp; Stella, my acoustic guitar joined the fun on the chorus parts of the song.

I would like to than Ryan Flemming, who helped me with the bass guitar. He adds so much awesomeness to this song with his funky fresh groove. Thanks Ryan!

Guitar Riffs United: Just Add Drums

So I was playing around in Ableton Live and put this together rather quickly. It was fun, I thought it sounded neat, so I’m sharing with you. I hope you like it. I’m trying to use Ableton for songwriting and ideas when they hit. The way it works makes it very easy to do so. I hope to be able to possibly take this idea further than this small little loop (the original riff I played is hard panned to the left), but I wanted to share it cause I love how all four parts fit and sync together without being too much of a mess (at least to my ears).

The Tabernacle: Mute Math in Atlanta on a Friday Night

Nat and I had the awesome privilege of going to see MUTEMATH play in Atlanta, Georgia this past weekend at a great venue called The Tabernacle. It’s an old church that was converted into a nice concert hall. Probably one of the coolest ones I’ve ever been to or seen.

Because we got our tickets a few months back as part of an album pre-order/VIP promotion, we received a ‘First in Line’ pass which allowed us to get in a little early to the show before other folks and have some pizza and drinks, and buy stuff without the crowds if we wanted to.

This worked out great because Nat and I were able to get a great spot near the front of the stage. You couldn’t ask for a better spot to enjoy the show.

I didn’t bring my camera like I usually do, and only took a few photos with the cell phone, so I don’t really have anything to share, but I couldn’t resist filming something, so near the end of the show, I pulled out a little portable camera that my dad let me borrow and filmed a song called Reset and another part of the show where Darren King (the drummer) stands on top of a floor tom that is being held up by the crowd, and then jumps back into the crowd and crowd surfs. All that happened within 3 feet of me. Pretty cool.

Oh, also, we found out that they were filming the show for a DVD, if it all works out. I was in front of the camera man quite a few times, as was my better half, so there’s quite the possibility that we might make it on the DVD. Very cool stuff.

Sammy J and the All Stars and Late Night Cafe: Expression 2009

This past weekend, Christian Heritage Church here in Tallahassee hosted their 2nd annual Expression event.

I was able to participate in two ways.

The first way was as a trio with a couple of friends. We did 4 songs that I wrote and a good time was had by all. I was very pleased with how things turned out with just one rehearsal. I’m looking forward to performing more with these guys as opportunities arise.

Unfortunately, I’ve only got a 30 second clip of a song we performed because the memory card ran out of memory, but it gives you a good idea of how we looked and sounded. Check it out below.

The 2nd way I was able to participate was through the Late Night Cafe which was part of a songwriting competition. To enter to competition, I had to submit an mp3 my song and my song was judged based on the mp3.

What was great about the competition this year was that we received the judging score cards to see how we were judged and it included comments from the judges. I didn’t win the competition, and the scoring wasn’t so great, but I am quite ok with that. My purpose for entering is more to get comfortable singing my songs out in public and to get a feel for how people like the songs.

Based on that, my songs are doing really good. When the band finished playing the set, I got quite a few compliments on a great set from folks, many whom I didn’t know (maybe they were just trying to be nice). In addition to that, once I finished performing at the Late Night Cafe, I got quite a few compliments as well from folks I didn’t know, in addition to a “you should have won”, and a request for a website or place to get a CD. I was very encouraged to hear that.

I would actually like to share the judge’s comments later, because I found a couple of them to be quite interesting. I’d like to get your opinion, dear reader, and thoughts the decisions the judges made, as well as your thoughts based on hearing the song.
